Move Day Planning

There’s a lot to prepare for move day. Here are the most important things to have ready when the crew arrives:

  1. Have all your boxes sealed on the top and bottom with tape and have lids on any totes so the crew can stack them in the truck.

  2. Label your boxes on the top and one side with the room they will go to at the destination location and a brief description of what is in the box.

  3. If you have children or pets, it is best to arrange for them to be off-site during the move if possible. If that isn’t possible for your family, have a plan for them to be away from the action as much as possible.

  4. If you are moving into storage, have your storage unit set up and ensure you have access prior to moving day.

  5. Moving day can be chaotic, be sure to pack a bag with essential items that you will need the day of the move such as a change of clothes, toiletries, towels and linens, snacks and water, medications, chargers, and wallets.

  6. Pack any hazardous and liquid materials such as chemical cleaners, aerosol cans, ammunition, open oils and alcohol separate from the items the movers will take. Household movers are prohibited from taking them by law. This also includes propane tanks. Other items that movers can’t take are open perishable foods and live plants.

  7. Empty mowers, lawn mowers, and weed whackers of any gasoline if you plan for the movers to transport those items.

  8. Empty any fridges and freezers that will be moving. We recommend unplugging and defrosting freezers a few days prior to the move.

  9. Disconnect any appliances that will be moving.

  10. Unmount and pack any TVs that will be moving.

  11. Leave out Ziploc bags for any furniture hardware and garbage bags for any unwanted items.

  12. If you are fighting winter weather during your move, please make sure your driveway and sidewalk have been cleared and salted for the mover’s safety.
